Exercise Better Than Games For Brain, Study Shows

Wednesday, October 31st, 2012

As a respected At-Home Care provider in Indianapolis for over 20 years, Alliance Home Health Care likes to stay up-to-date on the latest breaks in Alzheimer’s research and any news that could benefit Senior Care and keep loved ones in their home for as long as possible. One of the biggest trends we’ve been following in research right now concerns the growing education on early prevention, and the healthy steps that, if taken early, can help in delaying or even stopping the onset of Alzheimer’s.

For instance, a new study, published in the journal Neurology, suggests that exercise is more effective in preserving brain function than cognitive challenges and puzzles.

Researchers studied 700 participants in 2006, all aged 70-years-old, and asked them to keep a log of their physical and intellectual activity. After five years, researchers performed a MRI on participants and found that those who stayed active physically showed the least amount of brain shrinkage and white matter lesions; two common indicators of the onset of Alzheimer’s disease.

Researchers believe that the correlation may have to do with exercise being vital to a healthy heart. Stating that the brain and heart function are a lot more intertwined than one thinks. Particularly, in the fact that an unhealthy heart is less efficient at pumping blood, and blood flow is critical to healthy brain functioning.

While researchers stress that there is still a lot to learn, they advise that nothing in the study suggested that staying intellectually active had any negative effects on brain function. And, that perhaps even more positive effects of intellectual activity will show in further studies. Urging seniors to stay mentally, as well as physically active.

New Medicare Rules Make Home Health Care More Affordable

Monday, October 29th, 2012

Looking for Home Health Care in Indianapolis?

A rewriting of an old Medicare rule could make Home Health Care more affordable for some people, according to a New York Times article. Which could be good news for many people considering the costs and benefits to Home Health Care.

Under the old rule, patients qualified for Home Health Care if they were likely to display a medical or functional improvement. The amended rule now states one can qualify if Home Health Care can “maintain the patient’s current condition or prevent or slow further deterioration.”

The amended rule could potentially ease the burden for thousands of families caring for friends and loved one’s with certain diseases, such as Alzheimer’s, where long-term comfort and help is needed to maintain a certain quality of life.

Alliance Home Health Care knows that comfort, proper care, and skilled nursing are essential to keeping your friend or loved one at home for as long as possible. We have provided quality Home Health Care in Indianapolis since 1991, and work tirelessly to help your friend or loved one’s quality of life, and increase your peace of mind.
