Home Health Care Tips: Summer Reminders for Home Health Care Workers

Wednesday, July 29th, 2015

We are into the final days of summer here in Indianapolis, but we are also getting into the hottest and driest time of the year. Which is exactly why it is so important for familial caregivers, home health care workers, and senior care caregivers to make sure they are taking the right steps to assure those they help are staying safe.

Below are some great home health care tips on seniors staying safe during the summer:

1.) Stay hydrated

This tip is important for anyone, no matter what age you are, but it is crucially important to remember if you are a home health worker caring for someone with a dementia-related illness. Those with cognitive impairments sometimes can not recognize if they are thirsty or remember the last time they had a glass of water. In these cases, it’s important to be proactive in making sure that those you take care of have their daily intake of water.

2.)  Keep your cool

Again, this is another tip for senior care and home health care workers who are caring for someone with a cognitive impairment. In some instances, people with dementia-related illnesses won’t dress appropriately for the weather and may dress too warm for the heat outside. Always make sure those you care for are dressed for the season and remember that as we get older our bodies don’t respond to the heat as well as when we are young. So, if you’re a family member caring for a loved one and your hot, then odds are those you are helping are hot as well.

Tip: If the house is too hot, public areas like libraries that offer air-conditioning are perfect summer trips.

3.) Keep your friends (and neighbors) close

Whether you’re a familial caregiver or home health care worker, keep a list of who you’re helping’s friends and neighbors and encourage those people to stop by and check in during the hotter days. You can’t always be there, but it’s good to connect with the people who are close by and can be if needed.
