It use to be considered a normal part of aging - calling the elderly senile was a common theme. Through medical observation this senility has diagnosed as Dementia.

Dementia is not a specific disease but a descriptive term for a collection of symptoms. These symptoms can be caused by number of disorders that affect the brain. There are many forms of Dementia. The most recognizable is Alzheimer's Disease. This condition accounts for almost half of all Dementia cases. Some other types are Lewy Body Dementia, Huntington Disease, and even Parkinson Disease.

Dementia affects 4-5 million people in the United States alone. This number will rise as more people reach the 65 and older - the age Dementia starts to affect a person.

How do we treat Dementia? Well, the Medical community is in agreement that care should focus on optimizing the individual's health and quality of life. This treatment most often consists of medications and nondrug treatments such as behavioral therapy.

Alliance Home Health Care developed the Nostalgia Program to treat Dementia by engaging our clients in recreation, promoting relaxation, encouraging reminiscence, building relationships, and providing resources to our clients' families.
